What Families Tell Us

LC

Leung Chi Wai

Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong

"My mother has been at Harbor Willow for almost two years now. What struck me most, right from the beginning, was that the staff actually remembered who she was — her name, her preferences, the topics she liked to talk about. That does not sound like a lot, but it made an enormous difference to how she settled in."

"We used the Discovery Stay before committing. I was a little sceptical that five days would tell us much — but it genuinely did. The staff gave us a thoughtful account of how my father had spent his time, which activities he had joined, what he had asked for at mealtimes. It helped us make a decision we all felt good about."

Shau Kei Wan, Hong Kong

"My grandmother joined the Cultural Heritage Mornings about four months ago. She was not sure she would enjoy Cantonese opera appreciation — she said she had never really paid attention to it before. Now she talks about it every time I visit. Something about the way the sessions are run makes people want to engage."

Chai Wan, Hong Kong

"The thing I appreciate most is the communication. Whenever something happens — even something minor — someone from the home calls us to let us know. We do not have to wonder. That peace of mind is genuinely valuable when you are a working family trying to make sure an elderly parent is being well looked after."

"My uncle had always resisted the idea of moving into a residential home. It took some time to convince him to try the Discovery Stay. After five days, he told me he wanted to stay. The rooftop terrace had a lot to do with it, I think — he grew up in Shau Kei Wan and said it felt like coming home."

Tam Lai Chu

"The meals deserve a mention on their own. My mother is quite particular about food — she spent forty years cooking for a family and has opinions. She has not complained once since moving in. That alone tells me the kitchen team is doing something right."

In Their Own Words

Family Journeys

Three families share how they came to Harbor Willow and what the experience has been like.

The Situation

An elderly father living alone after his wife passed

Mr. Ng's three children had noticed he was increasingly withdrawn after their mother's passing. He was eating irregularly and seemed to lack any routine or reason to leave the flat.

What Changed

A Discovery Stay that led to Willow Residence

After the five-day stay, Mr. Ng told his eldest son he had enjoyed breakfast more than he had in months. He appreciated the film evenings and had started talking to other residents. He asked to stay.

18 Months Later

A sense of structure and renewed social connection

Mr. Ng now looks forward to the weekly craft sessions and has become a fixture at the film evenings. His children visit regularly and describe a father who is engaged, calm, and well cared for.

The Situation

A retired teacher with a love of local history

Mrs. Ho had been active in her community for decades. After a change in her living circumstances, her daughter began looking for something that would keep her intellectually engaged.

What Changed

Cultural Heritage Mornings — three sessions a week

Mrs. Ho joined the Cultural Heritage Mornings as an external participant before eventually moving into Willow Residence. The programme gave her a social context that she had been missing.

One Year On

A resident who now shares her own stories in sessions

Mrs. Ho brings her own memories of old Hong Kong to the history storytelling mornings. The facilitator describes her as one of the most valued voices in the room.
